Make Your Home Green

  1. Saving Electricity
    • Set thermostat a few degrees higher in the summer (i.e. 75 degrees instead of 70).
    • Change the air filter every 3 months (if filter is dirty after 1 month, change it).
    • To use less air conditioning, cover sun-filled windows with aluminum foil. If appearance matters, you can also use Energy Saving Insulated Blackout Drapes.
    • Replace all lightbulbs to energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs such as these Sylvania 13-Watt Bulbs.
    • For greater long term savings, use GE 7-Watt Energy Smart LED Light Bulb which can last up to 13 years.
    • Hang dry clothes on an Indoor Folding Drying Rack to save electricity, heat and clothes to last longer.
    • Avoid using a dishwasher if possible as it consumes a large amount of energy.
    • Unplug electronics not in use (computers, monitors, stereos, TV, microwave oven).

  2. Saving Gas & Heat
    • Set thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter (i.e. 68 degrees instead of 75) and wear warmer clothing.
    • Use the 3M Window Insulator Kit to keep heat in and cold drafts out.
    • When washing clothes, pre-treat stains and use cold or warm temperature setting to save hot water. Try to conserve hot water only for very dirty clothes.
    • Consider replacing old furnaces or at the very least, clean and maintain it regularly.
    • Do laundry and use dishwashers during off-peak hours. Check your energy bills or call customer service to find out when off-peak hours are.

  3. Saving Water
    • Replace shower head with a Water-Saving Showerhead and reduce shower time.
    • Fixing leaky faucets and toilets can save up to 20 gallons a day. Replace faucets with "low-flow" units. Toilets installed before 1992 use 3.5 gallons and before 1984 use over 5 gallons per flush. Toilets today use only 1.6 gallons per flush or less.
    • Using an ENERGY STAR washing machine can save up to 7,000 gallons a year.
    • Water your lawn in the morning or evening to reduce water lost to evaporation.
    • Set lawn mower blades one notch higher as longer grass will have less evaporation and can save over 500 gallons of water per month.
    • For new yards and gardens in areas with longer periods of high heat (TX, AZ, NV, etc), consider looking in to sythentic grass. Although more expensive than real grass, sythentic grass requires no water or maintenance and comes with warranty.

  4. Reducing Waste
    • Similar to using recycled paper, save money, ink and cartridges with OEM / Refilled Ink Cartridges.
    • Avoid drinking water bottles at home. Buy a Water Filtration Dispenser, Faucet Filter or 1-gallon water bottles at the supermarket to reduce waste / recycling.
    • Reduce wasting paper and stamps. Set up bills (phone, electric, gas, cable, credit card, etc) to be sent by e-mail and make payments online or automate payments.
    • Do not immediately throw away things that are no longer in use and creating more waste, such as TVs, DVD players, radios, beds, dressers, desks, etc. Post an ad on Craigslist.org (yes, even broken items) under the appropriate category and title the posting "FREE ...". What you consider trash, others may want it or can fix it.
